Top 13 Tips for Growing Sales By Enhancing Your Visual Merchandising

31st Jan 2023

Visual merchandising in retail and showrooms can significantly impact your customer’s shopping experience, their behaviour and ultimately, your sales.

An effective retail merchandising strategy can influence how consumers discover products, evaluate their purchases, and take action on making purchases.

When product displays appeal to the senses and engage your target audience, customers can browse easier and shop with gusto.

In contrast, when showrooms and store displays lack strategy, the space may feel disorganised, cluttered, or stale to the customer, resulting in fewer sales.

Given our years of duty in the retail design and fit-out industry, let's share a thing or two!

Hence, the Surestyle team have compiled our Top 10 Tips for Growing Sales By Enhancing Your Visual Merchandising, sourced from experts in the industry.

Dive in!

  1. Make displays interactive. Create displays that show your products in use or allow shoppers to grab, touch and interact with products. For example, mannequins help people see your products in action. Hanging racks give customers control over the browsing experience. Products on eye-level shelving are more likely to be grabbed and purchased.

  2. Display your best products front and centre. Don’t hide your top sellers on roads less travelled. Display your hero product/s and new products at the store entrance or in a more visible central location. It is a powerful way to capture your customer’s attention, interest and desire.
  3. Regularly change your displays. Make your products pop. Modify your modular display systems. Changes keep your store fresh and attractive to regulars. Perhaps, you’ve noticed a higher tendency for customers to be drawn to specific products that could be more accessible and visible. Simple reconfigurations are easy and quick with our flexiWALL, flexiPLUS, flexiVOGUE and Slatpanel systems.

  4. Keep things neat and tidy. No one can deny an organised space looks good! It also allows customers to find what they need faster, thus enhancing the buying experience, thus aiding more sales!
  5. Diversify your display systems. Make your displays multidimensional. Don’t get stuck on one-dimensional systems. Wall shelves, modular display units, gondola displays, tables, low benches, plinths and mannequins, Surestyle’s modular presentation systems offer user-friendly customisability and modern aesthetics.
  6. Choose modular display systems. With countless configurations and design options, FlexiWall, FlexiPlus, and Slat-panel parts and accessories are entirely interchangeable to create endless configurations, sections and customised space. Users can change shelving, hanging and display merchandising layouts in minutes.

  7. Less is often more. Avoid clutter and chaos in displays. Instead, focus on spotlighting items or a few related items to create a coherent theme. Ensure products have space to shine and will stand out to customers.
  8. Lighting can be a game-changer for sales. Lighting can highlight products, create store atmospherics, and impact customer behaviour. Research shows that buyers tend to spend more time in warmer lighting areas. Avoid creating shadows with stacking of boxy fixtures over tabletops and shelves.
  9. Create sufficient space between fixtures. Give your customer enough personal space to browse comfortably. Shoppers should be able to navigate the store without feeling claustrophobic or rushed by other passers-by, in fact some shoppers simply avoid visiting stores that look too crowded . Ensure you have some good lines of sight throughout the store both at floor level, eye level and at ceiling height, tempting the shopper they may be missing out if they don’t check out all of the space.
  10. Window Displays Attract. First impressions are powerful. Display the new and valuable products in the window or nearest the entrance to attract foot traffic. Consider seasonal themes and promotional drives for impactful window displays. Mannequins and freestanding modular displays like FlexiPLUS are perfect for your window display mix.
  11. Up-skill your Sales team on Visual Merchandising. Your people must know why and how to display for sales. Creativity isn’t always teachable, though creating a composition can be learnt. Bonus points for observing customer behaviour and making adjustments for an improved experience.
  12. Implementing a seasonal merchandising strategy. The seasons provide change and encourage and excite shoppers for what’s ahead with colours, weather, themes, trends, clothes, and activities of each season- Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring and events such as Christmas, Easter and Matariki. Leverage the emotional triggers each season or event you want to evoke for your target audiences- what does the shopper need to look and feel their best?

It's essential to be well-prepared with a timeline for achieving the goals of each seasonal program, for merchandising success. Create a list of seasons you wish to showcase, each activity or task required and prepare a Gantt chart illustrating each seasonal activity.

  13. Harness the Power of Colour Blocking. Colour block merchandising is the retail sales strategy of organising products by colour to attract the eye of browsing shoppers. It's a subliminal technique that the average consumer doesn't notice, but it creates an engaging experience that leads them to take action and buy multiple items. Originally colour blocking referred to pairing Mondrian-style opposite colours to make an exciting and complementary visual experience of contrasts - but colour blocking can also be a singular colour or shade. Research affirms colour not only affects mood but has a direct psychological impact on shopping behaviour. For example, group seasonal or themed products of one colour en masse or conversely, merchandise different products, shapes and textures together by colour. SHOP NOW
